Ver en YouTubeGoing on a deep-sea expedition is many things. For students climbing the gangway onto R/V Falkor (too) for the very first time, it is an adventure and a stepping stone to a future career. For the scientists in charge, it is the culmination of decades of research and expertise-building, and months of planning. For the crew, the journey is never ordinary, but it is filled with the predictability and familiarity that comes with a career at sea. Whether it’s someone’s first or fifty-first journey, there are reasons to miss being at home. During the #SaltyStaircases expedition, Co-Chief Scientist Dr. Corday Selden photographed a stuffed pink rabbit around the ship; she plans to share the rabbit’s adventures with her daughter when she’s older. In this latest Science Story — a recurring series that focuses on the people behind the science — Dr. Selden shares what it is like to go to sea for the first time as a chief scientist and as a new mother.
