It can look almost empty, but there is so much there — if we can find the right ways to listen,” said Artist/Researcher Robertina Šebjanič. She is interested in revealing the ocean's vastness, its unseen histories, and vibrant ecosystems that are usually hidden from our perception, using sonic and underwater data collected by scientists. In August, Robertina joined the #SaltyStaircases expedition aboard R/V Falkor (too). Dr. Joseph Gradone and Dr. Corday Selden of Rutgers University led the science cruise to the Tropical Atlantic. Her practice involves working alongside the science team to translate the data-driven view of the Ocean into a sensorial, embodied experience. She sees that beneath the measurements and data are living creatures, and that listening can offer an empathic connection for the audience to sense and generate a new way of seeing and connecting with the ocean. She added, "Listening is another way of paying attention, both to what the ocean might reveal and to how much remains unknown."
